This street in the City of Roses, capital of the Free State Province has been named a national monument due to the rich historic significance it possesses. Lining this street are museums and stately, historic buildings along with memorials and smaller monuments. Bloemfontein is perhaps one of the most important in South Africa as it lies in the heart of all transportation routes and it is the Judicial capital of South Africa.

Historical Attractions in Bloem

The atmosphere of the city is created mainly due to its old buildings towering above the quiet suburbs and neat streets. Some of the most historic are the City Hall, the Old Presidency, the Dutch Reformed Church, the Anglican Cathedral and the railway station. To learn more about the history of the area you can visit the Bloemfontein National Museum, the Women’s Monument and War Memorial.

Things to See and Do

In the city and along the outskirts you can visit the Orchid House which is an oasis for these stunning plants. If you want a relaxing family braai or picnic head for Loch Logan and take some time to shop at the Loch Logan Waterfront while you are nearby. You can also take a break at the exciting Aventura Maselspoort for some water sports and recreation. Another great place to visit is the old Free State National Botanical Gardens where you can explore the indigenous vegetation on winding pathways or climb the dolerite koppies for a better view. The best time to visit is during spring when all the flowers are in full bloom. Also take a turn at the Bloemfontein Zoo.

This zoo is one of a kind where you can actually attend a Zoo Snooze. Bring the kids and sleep over at the zoo for a night. You can also touch a cheetah called Shadow (quite famous in South Africa) as part of an awesome wildlife experience. Culture is a big part of this city and there are many theaters and night clubs to visit, as well as art galleries, restaurants, and cafes.
