Religion, Geography, and Beginnings

Although the country has no official denomination, Mexico is predominantly a Catholic nation, with 89% of the population actively practicing Catholicism.

6% of the Mexican population is Protestant and 5% is denominated as other religions such as Muslim and Jewish.

Mexico is bordered by the United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to its south. The westernmost part of Mexico consists of the Baja, California peninsula, an 800 mile stretch of land that extends southeasterly from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas. The easternmost region of Mexico consists of the Yucatan peninsula, which is considered Central America because it positioned so far south.

The center of Mexico is a great elevated plateau bordered on the east and west by extensive mountain ranges. Ocean lowlands constitute the coastal areas outside of the mountain chains. Mexican territory also reaches beyond the beaches into the many islands which are also part of the nation.

Mexico has a rich cultural history, considering many of the world’s most legendary empires were built in Mexico. Mayans were indigenous before Aztecs rose to power. The Aztecs were defeated by Spanish explorer Hernando Cortes in 1521, making Mexico a part of Spain for the next 300 years, until the Mexican revolt in 1810 led to Mexican independence in 1821.
