  • Great Summer Trips

You may have heard us sound off regarding the fact that a large portion of travelers look for deals without having any idea of where they’d like to go, first. So in order to help you out, we’re featuring a couple of great travel ideas for the summer (kid friendly of course) that won’t break bank.

Here are a few of FrugalMonkey’s great summer trip ideas for the week of July 27, 2009.

    Disney World Resort, Anyone?

If you’ve never booked a vacation through Southwest Airlines’ Vacations, then you’re missing out on some great travel deals for summer. Southwest Vacations include a number of great booking deals that vary throughout the year. Right now, for example, every one person who flies to Walt Disney World Resort, the second person flies free! Of course there are some exceptions. For instance you have to fly Monday through Thursday and book before August 6, 2009. In addition your trip has to be completed before the end of the year. Still, we think it’s a pretty great deal. And, parents, perfect for kids don’t you think? Hurry-this deal won’t last long!

    Aloha, Hawaii

Who can argue a summer vacation spent lounging poolside, or chasing waves on the beaches of Honolulu, Hawaii? We didn’t think so.

While most Hawaii vacations are too expensive for large families on a budget to book, this year that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Book round trip flights for half of what you paid last year. Find out more about traveling in Hawaii from FrugalMonkey’s free online Hawaii travel guide.

    Margaritas in Mexico

Mexico is a favorite and no one will likely argue! Beautiful Caribbean beaches in Cancun, fun water activities for kids, scuba diving in Mexico water, and hiking-Mexico has it all! Find out more about the fun that awaits your family on a vacation to Mexico. What will make this vacation even sweeter is the fact that Mexico is amazing cheap right now. Book round trip flights for less than $300 from the US.

    Now that’s great travel.

  • Greek Travel Tip

Fly to Greece this summer and enjoy an incredible last minute island vacation. Flights from the US to Greece have historically been pretty expensive. Although, for last minute travelers, there are some incredible deals. While it might be hard to pinpoint exactly which type of Grecian vacation you want to enjoy (island vacations,  hiking by the lakes in the north, seeing the monuments, or shopping in the cities), first consider a few FrugalMonkey tips on flying to Greece.

When most people travel to Greece they arrive in Athens. If you’re using your FrugalMonkey advice, then you’re searching for discount flights on travel sites like Expedia and Orbitz. Be sure when they recommend a flight ‘near’ Athens that it actually makes sense for your vacation. Some of their recommendations will place you on islands where your only other choice for Athens is an expensive and slow ferry, or another expensive flight. Book direct!

  • This Summer’s Best Travel Deal

Travel has certainly been in the foreground this summer with so many amazing travel deals. We tried to think back about the best discounts and best deals available to travelers in order to bring you the summer’s best travel deal. And while two locations largely stood out among the crowd, we’ve come to a decision.

The Summer’s Best Travel Deal is: A vacation to Australia!

Although there were so many wonderful destinations to pick from, we had to go with Australia. Qantas has lowered its prices so significantly that you can literally travel to Australia for half the price you would have paid years ago. It is also an international destination which means discounts like this aren’t likely to pop up again in the next few years. Additionally, you can still cash in on these amazing prices. See FrugalMonkey’s entire section on Australian travel, now!

  • Three Great Places to Travel and Save

Summer travelers, consider setting your vacation sites on the southern hemisphere where residents are bundling up for winter, instead of applying sunscreen and heading for the beach.

One great way to save money while traveling is by flying to countries and locations that are currently in their “low” or “off” seasons for travel. This generally means hotels, car rentals, excursions and even flight prices are lower than normal. We found three great vacation destinations that you can enjoy, both for their low prices during the off-season and for their excellent activities for travelers.

    Australia
Australia has experienced a lull in tourism due to the slowing economy in addition to the weakening Australian dollar. Right now, flights to Australian cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth are at an all time low, making it the perfect chance to experience an Australian vacation. Because of Australia’s location in the southern hemisphere it is currently winter, the slowest season for tourism in Australia. This combination means that hotels and vacation packages are even lower than traditional industry prices making it a great international vacation destination for families, couples or individuals on a budget. Take tour of the Australian outback for hundreds cheaper than you would during a December vacation and enjoy cultural highlights in Sydney and Brisbane that aren’t weather dependent. Australia’s climate is so temperate in fact, that on any given day you might catch enough good weather for a dip in the ocean. Scuba diving and snorkeling is year round – especially with the help of wet suits.

    Argentina
Our next great southern hemisphere cheap vacation is in Argentina, where winter prices make traveling extra affordable. Traveling within Argentina is already affordable due to favorable exchange rates and with such a large geography travelers can enjoy wine tasting in Mendoza, skiing in Bariloche or Las Lenas and shopping in Buenos Aires all in one great vacation. Argentina is also very close to Uruguay, Brazil and Chile three other excellent (and affordable) South American vacations to take this winter. Look for cheap flights and hotel deals online as well as in our section on Argentine travel.

    South Africa
Last but certainly not least comes South Africa, where travel prices are dropping to the lowest figures in years. While South Africa is a popular beach destination is also has a number of fun activities that are not only enjoyable during all sorts of weather but are also considerably cheaper this time of year. We’ve recently had our eye on some amazing South African safari deals, which take you in the rugged wilderness surrounding South Africa’s metropolitan cities. Weather stays fairly temperate all year round and animals are more active on cooler days than very hot ones. You can also enjoy wine tasting in South Africa and a number of cultural events in Cape Town or Johannesburg. With cheap hotels in South Africa, along with outings like safaris – take a budget vacation to an incredible and exotic place.

  • Cheap Roundtrip Flights to Hawaii

Lately we’ve been reporting on cheap airfares from the west coast of the United States to Hawaii, leaving travel from NYC or Washington D.C. largely out of the Hawaii travel equation. This week however, we’re bringing the cheapest airfares to Hawaii all the way to our east coast friends. This week book roundtrip flights to Honolulu from NYC for $256. You can find this deal on Fly.com, a new site owned by the well-established Travelzoo.com. This flight deal begins in August and travelers must abide by some difficult to manage flight dates, but if you have flexible vacation time you can enjoy a seriously cheap flight to Hawaii.

Other flights from NYC to Honolulu will cost you around $500, not including tax.

  • Last Minute Travel Deals to The Caribbean

Sometimes the best last minute travel deals aren’t those that leave right away but are those that you need to book right away. Right now from July 15 the Caribbean island of Barbados is offering incredible travel deals for September through December. If you book within the next week and a half, a number of Barbados hotels are participating in a program that offers free breakfast, first night hotel stay for free and an air credit for up to $300 a person. Check out visitbarbados.org for more details and check out other area vacations like cruises to Mexico.

Don’t forget to plan your vacation with FrugalMonkey’s city profiles and vacation guides.

  • South African Safari Deals

We recently reported on South African wildlife safaris as an amazing vacation to take at any time of year. We’ve tracked down an amazing deal that provides a South African wildlife safari, hotel and airfare all for the low price of $2,839. If you book with South African Airways on their online vacation packages you can access the deal, which is an amazing savings for all that the package offers. If you’re not interested in a safari, check out some of the best hotels in South Africa. We list not only the best accommodations for cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg but also great lodging and wildlife excursion houses for the more adventurous, outdoorsy types. Enjoy!
