Whale Watching in Hermanus

If you are looking for an even quieter time in a small but interesting town, then Hermanus is the place to go. This is the largest and most famous town on Walker Bay and also boasts various small wine farms producing unique white, red and rose wines. Hermanus is, however, most famous for its Southern Right whales that come to breed here every year and have their babies in the warm secluded waters. From most vantage points in the town you have a stunning view over the Bay and can spot many whales during the season, which usually starts in around July and lasts until October or November.

The town holds a Whale Festival every year in September to commemorate these beautiful creatures and you will notice that almost every shop, bed and breakfast, hotel and street has a whale theme to it. There is even a huge whale fluke sculpture in the central fountain of the town square. There are a few museums which offer an interesting look into the history of whales here and there are also some real whale bones and a giant model of a whale skeleton. While you are here there are plenty of opportunities to shop and the outdoor craft market is a great place to find gifts. This is open every day except Sundays. The central mall offers a fine collection of unique shops with clothing, jewelry, curios, fun kid's items and toys, accessories, soaps, art, and much more.
