Salta, Argentina

Argentina's Salta Province is located in the Northwest region of the country and borders Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile. Nicknamed 'the beautiful' Salta is just that; its Andean background and high plains create a stunning background for the salty lakes and outdoor adventures that are popular for backpackers. Salta's scenic beauty is bolstered by its architecture, which pays tribute to its Spanish heritage. Like many of Argentina's cities, Salta was founded in the colonial era and reflects such by the several mansions and colonial architecture found in this University town.

Salta is Argentina's eight largest city populated by around 450,000 people. Its weather is warm and dry and Salta has several reputable wineries that are increasing in reputation and popularity as a result of this arid climate. Because of its geographical location to the north and its temperate climate, Salta can be visited with the promise of good weather through most of the year (late August - April).

Sights and Activities

One of Salta's most popular tourist attractions is the Train to the clouds or Tren a las Nubes. This all day train tour ascends 4200 meters and runs 217 kilometers on a tour that lays claim to Salta's amazing engineering only made better with Salta's gorgeous scenery as the back drop.

Because of its popularity with backpackers Salta has a variety of outdoor adventures for those looking for an adrenaline rush. Rafting is a very popular day activity but it doesn't stop there. Extreme Games offers kayaking, horse riding, hiking, bungee jumping and zip lines for the true adventure seekers and rafting and other water activities are also very popular.

For a bit less guidance, Jeep rentals are available for a three-day jaunt around Salta's national parks and mountain ranges. This has been boasted as one of the best ways to see Salta's backcountry and many travelers rave over this independent adventure. A valid drivers license is needed and you need to be over 21.

Arriving and Staying

Salta is accessible by bus or plane and Aerolineas Argentina and LAN have connecting flights from most of Argentina's major cities.

There are a variety of hostels and nice hotels in Salta. Varying prices and accommodations mean there is the right place to stay for anyone visiting this amazing city.
